Han Lee’s Taekwondo Academy is a family-oriented martial arts school where we take pride in developing exceptional attitudes through martial arts training. Our Martial Arts facilities in Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch, and Centennial produce leaders throughout our community that have the confidence to be successful in any undertaking they choose.
We take a “mental skills first” approach to physical self-defense, as we give students the confidence not to fight, and to first use their mental skills for problem solving and safety. When taught in this manner, Taekwondo can provide a valuable way for young people to acquire important social skills that will naturally cultivate healthier and more peaceful relationships.
Literally translated, the Korean word “TAE” means “to kick with the foot.” “KWON” implies “a hand or fist to block, punch, or strike,” and “DO” means a way or an art. Therefore, “TAEKWONDO” means “the art of kicking, blocking, and punching.” Taekwondo is not only kicking and punching but more importantly, at the Han Lee Taekwondo Academy, we are committed to teaching our students the life skills that will help them succeed in any endeavor they may choose to do.
One glance at Grandmaster Han Lee’s impressive Taekwondo track record is enough to make any student shake in his dobok. Yes, he is a formidable competitor, a savvy businessman, a seventh-degree black belt, and an Olympic medalist. Yet his warm and welcoming smile puts anyone at ease, and his passion and commitment to teaching are evident to anyone he meets.
Grandmaster Han Won Lee began studying Taekwondo at the age of 12 in Korea, then continued when his family moved to the United States in 1976. He studied under Grandmaster Joseph Lloyd and Great Grandmaster Chong, where his passion for teaching was first ignited. He was named Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Olympic Committee in 1986. He placed bronze in Taekwondo at the Olympics in 1988, served as head coach for the U.S. Olympic team from 1993-2003, and in 1996, was named USA National Coach of the Year by the U.S. Olympic Committee. Today, Grandmaster Lee owns three Taekwondo schools in the Denver Metro area, where he puts more than 35 years of training to use in developing students of all ages.
Grandmaster Lee says, “To hear the parents tell me of their children’s transformation after learning Taekwondo, that is the most rewarding thing for me as a teacher.”
Grandmaster Lee’s dream is to help underprivileged children in low-income neighborhoods. He volunteers his time to teach TKD at schools in deprived areas. His next big goal is to open a TKD school in one of these underserved areas, where children can come in after school for tutoring and help with their homework, as well as to take TKD classes. He is currently moving forward and securing funding to make this dream a reality.
